PSHE and RSE

We aim to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to make appropriate choices towards living healthy, confident and independent lives.

We teach pupils about their role in society to help them become informed, active and responsible citizens. We value all positive contributions to the life of the school, encouraging a sense of belonging, respect, tolerance and shared ownership. We have strong anti bullying policies and strategies in place and a Learning Mentor to support children with issues they may face.

Our PSHE education includes the delivery of RSE. It considers the whole child, promoting their personal, social and emotional development as well as health and well being. We aim to give pupils the knowledge and skills they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives. Our PSHE lessons aim to help all children understand how they themselves are developing personally and socially, as well as tackling many social and cultural issues that are part of becoming a well rounded member of society. We give pupils the ability to understand the rights and responsibilities they have to become a good citizen.

Protected Characteristics

At New York Primary School, our PSHE curriculum supports every pupil to flourish personally, socially and emotionally by fostering a culture of respect, understanding and inclusion. We teach children about protected characteristics — such as age, disability, gender, race, religion or belief and other differences recognised in law — helping them to recognise and value diversity in themselves and others. Through carefully planned lessons, whole-school assemblies and daily life in school, pupils explore what these characteristics mean and why fairness, equality and respect are fundamental to our shared community.

Children learn to celebrate uniqueness, challenge stereotypes and treat everyone with dignity and kindness, promoting positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging across our school. These themes run through PSHE lessons and are reinforced across other areas of learning and in everyday interactions, ensuring pupils develop the confidence and empathy to become thoughtful, respectful citizens.
